National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Staff Clinician Sickle Cell Branch The Division of Intramural Research (DIR) of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) is seeking to recruit an outstanding Staff Clinician to support the clinical program of the Sickle Cell Branch (SCB), NHLBI. The candidate for the position is to provide critical clinical services that allow the SCB to continue recruiting participants for research in various clinical protocols. The staff clinician’s responsibilities range from seeing out- and in-patients on a daily basis, attending in rotation with other staff in the SCB and the Hematology Branch, performing data analysis, assisting with the formation of clinical protocols, and mentoring and supervising clinical fellows. The SCB conducts research to understand sickle cell disease and identify markers of disease severity with the aim of improving the lives and care of patients with sickle cell disease. Existing interventional clinical protocols include a Phase I dose finding and safety study of mitapivat (AG348) in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD), and a follow-up extension study to evaluate the safety and tolerability of mitapivat (AG-348) as long-term maintenance therapy for subjects with SCD who have completed the Phase I dose escalation study of mitapivat. Non-interventional clinical protocols include a natural history protocol, a protocol exploring sickling assays and glycolytic intermediates as phenotypes for genetic association studies, and a protocol for development of assays. There are strong interactions with a wide range of independent research groups, and the position offers exceptional opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration within and outside of the NIH. The existing faculty in the NHLBI DIR is an outstanding group of internationally recognized biomedical researchers covering a wide range of basic and clinical research topics (please see ****complemented by the other research institutes within the DIR (please see ****The successful candidate should have a strong track record of achievement, expertise and experience in the area of Hematology.
