Juvenile Probation Department (HCJPD) provides supervision and services to youth between the ages of 10 and 17, who are under the jurisdiction of the Juvenile Court. HCJPD is the largest juvenile probation department in Texas with approximately 1,100 employees and over 3,500 youth referred to the department annually. The Administration building is located in Downtown Houston, Texas, with several field offices throughout the County and three secure residential facilities.

****About Health Services:
The Health Services division of the HCJPD is responsible for the medical, psychological, and treatment programs within the agency. The services operated within this division include the medical staff that assesses and treats youth in the detention center and post-adjudicated facilities. In addition, the division has mental health therapists who provide crisis counseling, and individual, group, and family therapy to youth both in the detention center and under community supervision. Lastly, the Health Services division oversees the four specialty courts that operate within the agency to help address some of the underlying factors that may be impacting a youth’s functioning.
About the Position:
The Juvenile Probation Officer's role is to provide supervision to youth dually involved with the **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. Juvenile Probation Department (HCJPD) and in the custody of the Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS).
Duties and Responsibilities:
Manages a caseload of juveniles active with the **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. Juvenile Probation Department and in the custody of the Department of Family and Protective Services, which includes overseeing and monitoring the supervision and treatment of youth.
Completes regular home, school, or placement visits with youth.
Completes all casework-related documents in a timely manner.
Participates as a member of the dual status unit in the staffing of cases under supervision.
Maintains contact with DFPS and community providers in order to monitor program and treatment compliance.
Maintains regular contact with treatment providers, guardian ad litem, defense attorneys, prosecutors, and the court regarding the progress of participants.
Works and collaborate with staff from the Collective Action for Youth (formally known as the **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. Youth Collective).
This position involves working with challenging youth where the use of crisis intervention and de-escalation strategies may be necessary to ensure the safety of both youth and staff.

Requirements
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university recognized by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board;
and
One (1) year of graduate study (18 completed post-graduate hours) at an accredited college or university in Criminology, Corrections, Counseling, Law, Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, or closely related field
Or
At least 1500 hours of paid or non-paid experience working in a social service, community, corrections, or juvenile agency that deals with offenders or disadvantaged persons
These hours must
have been earned within a 12 month period
Plus
Must pass the HCJPD Standard Basic Spelling & Grammar (ESkill) assessment with a score of at least 85%
Must be at least 21 years of age
Must possess a valid driver's license and have available transportation for use on the job with vehicle insurance to comply with the liability limits required by statute
Additional Requirements:
Every employee is subject to random testing for drug and alcohol or if there is a reasonable suspicion to believe that the employee is under the influence of a substance prohibited by this policy while in the course and scope of employment
All new employees are required to undergo and pass a physical examination administered by the Department Approved Contract Physician
At the time of the physical, applicants must present evidence of a tuberculosis (TB) skin test. In the event of a positive test, the applicant will be required to provide additional documentation
Upon receiving a conditional every applicant undergoes a criminal background check, drug screening, an achievement test, and psychological and physical examinations
If a public emergency is declared by the county, staff could be assigned to other duties and/or facilities and/or under the supervision of another county department
Certified copies of transcripts of educational credentials and/or college credits will be required during the hiring process.

Days and hours of work are typically Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Late nights and weekends if necessary and/or as scheduled
Salary:
$19.61 - $29.02/hour
Based on 26 Pay Periods

Applicants applying for a position requiring a state certification must adhere to the Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD) Standards. Before making an offer of employment for a position eligible for certification, HCJPD will verify that the applicant meets the background qualification for the position according to TJJD Standards 344.300 & 344.400
§344.400 Disqualifying Criminal History:
Applicants for Certification. An individual with the following criminal history is not eligible for initial certification or initial employment in a position requiring certification: Deferred adjudication or conviction for a felony listed in Texas Code of Criminal Procedure Article 42A.054 (formerly known as “3(g) offenses” under Article 42.12) or a substantially equivalent violation against the laws of another state or the United States, regardless of the date of disposition
Deferred adjudication or conviction for a felony other than those referenced in paragraph (1) of this subsection or a substantially equivalent violation against the laws of another state or the United States within the past 10 years
Deferred adjudication or conviction for any Class A or B misdemeanor in Texas or a substantially equivalent violation against the laws of another state or the United States within the past five years; or
Current requirement to register as a sex offender under Texas Code of Criminal Procedure Chapter 62. (b) Individuals Employed in a Position Requiring Certification
Employment is contingent upon passing a background check and drug screen.
