Engineering Technician Jobs description

There are a lot of civil engineering technician jobs available in the government today, at all three levels – local, state and federal. This is because of the need to maintain and construct new roads, water/ sewage systems and bridges, schools, and houses. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics there were over 91,000 such civil engineering technicians in 2008, with most of them employed at the local level with counties or cities. Civil engineering technicians are involved with carrying out the actual work involved in making and maintaining the infrastructure such as roads, bridges, installing traffic lights.
Because of this, they need to be very hands-on type of individuals who are able to work outside, where sometimes the weather can be extreme. They also need to be capable of determining if the materials and methods being used are appropriate or not. They are also responsible for ensuring that the project gets completed on time and at cost. They need to make reports and oversee the construction workers working on the project. The minimum educational requirement for civil engineering technician jobs is to have an associate’s degree in engineering technology. Their median annual salary was $45,000 in 2008 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
