About Our Job
The Denver Public Library (DPL) is a large urban library system that serves the City & County of Denver. DPL sees more than 4 million visitors every year across its 27 locations, serves Denver's most vulnerable communities through outreach and mobile services, hosts thousands of programs a year and manages a collection of more than 1.4 million physical and digital materials. We believe a strong library is vital for a strong community. DPL is committed to serving the evolving needs of Denverites through inspired programming, diverse collections, culturally-representative spaces and equitable policies & procedures.
This is an exciting opportunity to work in the Western History and Genealogy Department, part of Denver Public Library's Special Collections and Digital Archives (SCDA). The SCDA unit comprises two archival repositories: Western History and Genealogy at the Central Library, and the African American Research Library at Blair-Caldwell Library. If you love archival and special collections, have a passion for regional and local history, and love working to build and care for historical collections, this position may be for you! The Department's public area encompasses the entire fifth floor of Denver's Central Library. Our Western History, Conservation, Genealogy and 10th Mountain Division collections are nationally renowned. SCDA offers the community over 1 million digital records and over 300,000 publications. Digital records are distributed through its own Digital Asset Management system and through the Digital Public Library of America.
About the Job
In this 40 hour/week position, you will improve customer experiences by providing high-quality original, complex, and copy catalog records for non-archival special collections material, and by creating descriptions for our digital collections. While cataloging and metadata generation and remediation will be the focus of this position, you will also put your good work to use at the public-facing SCDA reference desk helping customers locate and use items from our collections.
Reporting to the Senior Special Collection Librarian who oversees the digital imaging lab, metadata, and special materials cataloging, you will have primary responsibility for providing expertise using MARC, AACR2, RDA, and Qualified Dublin Core - all in a collaborative environment. Our Dublin Core-based metadata profile consists of a mix of local and national controlled vocabularies for faceting and discovery.
In this role you will use your experience and initiative to play a large role in developing and strengthening SCDA cataloging and metadata guidelines, workflows, and related documentation. This includes actively participating in our ongoing metadata remediation efforts to remove or contextualize harmful legacy language from our catalog and digital collections. With a constant inflow of new material, you'll also work with your colleagues to improve workflows to ensure that our cataloging and project backlog is at a minimum.
You will work closely with our copy cataloger, and will occasionally need to help with copy cataloging responsibilities when we need additional capacity to handle large influxes of materials. You will work closely with the Senior Special Collection Librarian to develop practices and workflows that will help the department improve public access and discovery for the rich historical resources in our holdings, and work collaboratively with others in the library to ensure that our descriptive practices meet the practical needs of customers and staff.
This position is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys the unique challenges of special collections work, and employing an Equity, Diversity and Inclusion lens in our work to collect and make special collections available for users now and in the future.
About You
You share passion for the Denver Public Library and welcoming all customers, while also honoring the public's trust in our work caring for collections and making them accessible to the community and discoverable in aggregated environments.
