About Our Job
The Denver Public Library (DPL) is a large urban library system that serves the City & County of Denver. DPL sees more than 4 million visitors every year across its 27 locations, serves Denver's most vulnerable communities through outreach and mobile services, hosts thousands of programs a year and manages a collection of more than 1.4 million physical and digital materials. We believe a strong library is vital for a strong community. DPL is committed to serving the evolving needs of Denverites through inspired programming, diverse collections, culturally-representative spaces and equitable policies & procedures.
This is an exciting opportunity to work in the Special Collections and Digital Archives (SCDA), at the Western History and Genealogy department in the Denver Public Library. The SCDA unit comprises two archival repositories: Western History and Genealogy at the Central Library, and the African American Research Library at Blair-Caldwell Library. If you love archival and special collections, have a passion for regional and local history, and love working to build and care for historical collections, this position may be for you! The Department's public area encompasses the entire fifth floor of Denver's Central Library. Our Western History, Conservation, Genealogy and 10th Mountain Division collections are nationally renowned.
In this 40 hour/week position you will improve customer experiences by providing behind-the-scenes support for the library's growing collection of 5,000 archival collections. You will work with and shape archival collections by accessioning (recording and describing material to officially transfer newly acquired collections to the library) papers, photographs, and born digital collections. You'll gain expertise organizing and searching for records in our institutional archives. You'll help with administrative tasks to better care for our special collections including accession filing, maintaining registrar lists and keeping track of archival supplies to support current and upcoming projects. You will supervise and support volunteers who are assisting with rehousing and accessioning tasks. You will work with a diverse team of Archivist/Librarians and project Apprentices on collection processing projects and help with moving and transporting new acquisitions and helping to manage locations and storage of incoming collections.
This position is an excellent opportunity for someone considering library or archives work as a career, or for someone in the early stages of obtaining higher education in the library or archives fields. This position will enable you to practice: arrangement and description of collections; best practices for housing, storage and preservation; considering end-user needs in preparing collections for researchers; employing an Equity, Diversity and Inclusion lens in the work we do to collect and make available archival collections for users now and in the future.
You share passion for the Denver Public Library and welcoming all customers, while also honoring the public's trust in our work caring for collections and making them accessible to the community.
