Usually Ph.D. holders with a strong background in mathematics and other related fields such as computer science or engineering will have better opportunities to work as a Mathematician in government sector. Although professionals with master’s degree are also considered but a Mathematician’s position is mostly designated in research-and-development in laboratories, as part of technical teams, or teaching at University level so Ph.D. is essential. This job is generally part of other interdisciplinary teams with the government, including economists, engineers, computer scientists, physicists, technicians, and others. Ability to use mathematical models and computational methods to formulate and solve practical problems in business, government, engineering, and the physical, life, and social sciences is essential for this job. A Mathematician should also be prepared to work under tight deadlines and be part of projects and seminars assigned by the government, which may also require extensive travelling. The best part is a Mathematician’s average employment rate is much faster than professionals from other fields. Professionals with only bachelor’s degree in mathematics can work for the Federal Government.
